“SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™” uses as basis and inspiration content from the comic strips "THIMBLE THEATRE" (1919-1929) , “SAPPO (aka THE FIVE FIFTEEN)” (1920-1929), and “THIMBLE THEATRE STARRING POPEYE” (1929). All of these comic strips were originally created by E.C. Segar and have entered the PUBLIC DOMAIN as of January 1, 2025 as their copyrights expired after 95 years from the date of their first publication. This includes the now public domain content, situations, and characters that include Popeye the Sailor, Olive Oyl, Castor Oyl, Cylinda Oyl, Bernice the Whiffle Hen, Harold Ham Gravy, Cole Oyl, Nana Oyl, John Sappo, Myrtle Sappo, and Battling McGnat, as well as other characters, likenesses, and situations from this newspaper comic strip era (1919-1929).
In addition, “SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™” also uses as basis and inspiration further comic strips from “THIMBLE THEATRE STARRING POPEYE” (1930-38) created by E.C. Segar where it has been deemed by The Center of the Study for the Public Domain at Duke Law that the copyright owners originally failed to have their original copyright notices renewed in 1958 - 1959 – twenty years after Segar’s death in 1938. This includes (but is not limited to) the now public domain content, situations, and characters that Segar created before his death that include “The Spinach Power-Up”, J. Wellington Wimpy, The Sea Hag, Bernard the Vulture, Swee’pea, Bluto, Poopdeck Pappy, Alice the Goon, Oscar, Rough House, Toar, Eugene the Jeep, The Goons, King Blozo, General Bunzo, George W. Geezil, Bill Barnacle, Professor O.G. Wotasnozzle, Pooky Jones, Willie Wormwood, Bullo “Oxblood” Oxheart, Mrs. “Mudder” Oxheart, and Mr. Chizzleflint, as well as other characters, likenesses, and situations from that newspaper comic strip era (1930-1938).
In addition beyond E.C. Segar’s original work, “SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™” also uses as basis and inspiration further comic strips from “THIMBLE THEATRE STARRING POPEYE” (aka “POPEYE”) (1938 - 1956) by the successor comic creators Doc Winner, Tom Sims, Bill “Bela” Zaboly, Ralph Stein, and Bud Sagendorf for those works before 1964 that either failed to have their original copyright renewed after 28 years. This includes (but is not limited to) the now public domain content, situations, and characters that include Granny, Mae, and Sir Pomeroy as well as other characters, likenesses, and situations from this newspaper comic strip and comic book era (1938-1959).
In addition, “SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™” also uses as basis and inspiration thirty-five Popeye-related cartoons and animated shorts from Fleisher Studios, Paramount Studios, and/or Famous Studios that entered the public domain where the copyright renewal lapsed. This includes, but is not limited to, “Lets Sing with Popeye: I’m Popeye the Sailor Man” (1934), "Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor" (1936), "Little Swee'Pea" (1936), "Me Musical Nephews" (1942), and "Spree Lunch" (1957). This includes (but is not limited to) the now public domain content, situations, and characters that include Popeye, Olive Oyl, Wimpy, Bluto, Swee’pea, Sindbad the Sailor, Boola, Ali Baba, Pipeye, Peepeye, Poopeye and Pupeye, as well as other characters, likenesses, and situations from the animated cartoon shorts (1934-1957).
While “SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™” uses as basis and inspiration themes, content, situations, and characters mainly from Popeye-related stories that have fallen into the public domain, it also respectfully uses, from time-to-time, other public domain content, situations, and characters that may crossover from other comic strip, animated, or literary original sources including, but not limited to,(as of January 1, 2025) the “Steamboat Willie” public domain version of Mickey Mouse and other characters. In the future, as other characters fall in to the public domain (as of January 1, 2026 and beyond), they may be included and added to this list.

“SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™” also uses all-original brand new characters and character designs created by Ryan Scott McCullar. This includes (but is not limited to) content, situations, and characters that include the Great Moderator Juan Morgan Kneelbeforezod the Almighty, Hamburglarmeister, El Bruto, Crab Rag Goons, Andretti the Yeti, and more.

This comic strip is written out of love, courtesy and respect of the original source material and creators inspired by these public domain vintage comic strips and cartoons. This is an all-ages friendly comic strip and includes mild cartoon-like violence and possibly some cultural or social stereotypes associated with the characters' histories.
