SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™ - Character Spotlight: Popeye The Sailor Man

A Bonus Surprise for Today and a new feature...

Look for new "WHO AR' YA WHO NOW?" FILES every Saturday morning (usualy bu 8:00 a.m. U.S. Central Time) in lieu of a webcomic (as that is when I'm taking my regularly schedule weekly break with no webcomic.) Also, I will post new Character Spotlights whenever I need to take any additional time off from working on the comic strip for whatever reason (i.e. vacation, I'm tired, sick, need a break, too busy at home or work with some other project, etc. etc. etc. you get the drift...)

Please note these are written for my own SEA SHANTY FUNNIES webcomics cast and continuity and do not necessarily reflect official portrayal, histories, or continuities elsewhere.

There are so many characters coming in and out of the stories, and not all readers here may know histories or who they are, so this guide will help provide some reference material.

These are inspired by DICK TRACY’s “ROGUES’ GALLERY” entries as well as DC Comics’ “WHO’S WHO IN THE DC UNIVERSE” and Marvel’s “THE OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE”. Heck, even G.I. JOE ORDER OF BATTLE and bio cards! And those that know me and my past, know that DC Comics had me write up bios for GREEN ARROW SECRET FILES & ORIGINS and THE DC UNIVERSE ROLEPLAYING GAME… so these are done in a similar fashion for SEA SHANTY FUNNIES. And as time goes by (and if I stick around doing these) and there are any necessary updates I will do so.

ART: President Abraham Lincoln

Part two of a series of personal artwork that I didn't realize I was doing a themed series until I woke up this morning today for Lincoln's Birthday where we have an official holiday and the day off from work (here in Illinois). I'd like to share this one as I don't always share my artwork.

For those that don't know, I live in Springfield, Illinois. Home of President Abraham Lincoln and where he is buried. I grew up in "The Land of Lincoln" and have been soooooooooo surrounded by Lincoln all my life that you begin to take him for granted. Lincoln is everywhere. "Oh well" you think becoming numb to his name. Especially where everything around here is named after him and he is branded on most things.

But today feels different for me.

Since I was a kid, I collected Lincoln Pennies. Well, this year, Trump ordered the U.S. Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Part of me feels that is symbolic of the times though I know others will say logically it was cost prohibitive because it now costs three pennies to press a one-cent penny. It makes cents. I mean sense. But you know.

In these times, instead of thinking "Lincoln" is just a name of a local town, a name of a high school, our local airport here in Springfield, or the name of the local cab company... the armchair historian and hobbiest that I am who loves collecting Lincoln pennies and Lincoln on postage stamps (going back to the second official U.S. Stamp ever printed... my philately geekiness is showing) wants this to follow up to my recent MLK jr. drawing from a few weeks back as I think about Lincoln then and what he means to me now with the memory of his words today.

I remember my impressionable childhood that the first "real" book I ever read as a kid was Lincoln's biography around the time I was in second grade. Before I even moved to Springfield that next year in third grade. My ancestors from the South fought for the Confederacy on the other side and opposed Lincoln and the North. I have that part of my family's history that I acknowledge and it has led me to look at history and our society. However, growing up in Springfield and having Lincoln's heritage and memory as part of my DNA makes me realize that he was indeed one of our greatest American Presidents for a reason.

I, myself, truly respect Lincoln and admire him. Controversial to some, I know. And even so 161 years after his assassination that he didn't do enough of this, or he did that, or whatever. I'm not getting into that. I hope all Americans may continue to look up to him, honor his memory, and think about what he represents as we should lean into "The Better Angels of Our Nature" as he spoke about in his first inaugural address.

Just this week, I helped design a poster as a collaboration between the Illinois State Board of Education (where I work at as my "day job") and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum here in town for the upcoming Illinois Arts Education Week where students from Illinois (Kindergarten through High School) entered a competition to showcase their artwork for America's 250th Anniversary.

I've drawn Lincoln before. Sometimes for farcical reasons (My Benedictine University folks might remember the "Imma B" campaign. 'Nuff said.). But this time, I woke up this morning, paused and thought on having the day off (like we did for MLK, Jr.), and wanted to truly use this day to think about his legacy. I looked at one of his old photos for reference where he had a glint of a smile that I always loved. I think about visiting his home. His grave. And to have walked in rooms and streets that he himself walked.

So, I let this drawing, if you will, come out of me as my sincere expression and hope for America as a reminder that we remember Lincoln's Gettysburg Address that we had to memorize as kids over the founding principles of our country where he urged Americans to dedicate themselves to preserving the Union and ensuring the "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth" in which liberty and equality will be granted to us all as inalienable rights.

Anyways, I'm rambling.

Thank you, Honest Abe.

COMICS - Working on TWO books for the Printer. Plus 3:30 a.m. ruminations about Self-Publishing Comics

My 3:30 a.m. rambling. (I usually sleep in two shifts at night called "biphasic sleep"... I'm digressing. You can look it up) Going back to bed now. SEA SHANTY FUNNIES will resume on Friday morning. I was resting yet keeping busy with these projects for production on the print side. More info later. More comics later. Thank you!

I'm working on two projects at once as I prepare two books for the printer.

THRILL SEEKER COMICS ANTHOLOGY #2 is being printed now as I type this. I just got an email that the printer looked over the files and is proceeding with the printing of this book. I purchased an initial first print run of 50 books out of my pocket that I will make available directly from me for sale. Details later on how to do that if you're interested. It is a hefty book of about 40 pages in this comic. They should be shipped to me by my birthday in about two weeks.

I had to make some adjustments after looking at some proofs and I decided to go with a different printer that I trust a little more. I've decided after discussions with Jennifer that I am also abandoning the faux Benday dot look due to the artwork looking a little too blurry and muddy in print on paper. Yet, I'm keeping the paper tone look. So all faux Benday Dots have been removed. I made my decision in that.

I'm also proceeding with production of SEA SHANTY FUNNIES #1 which will collect all of the webcomics from 2025 that I released. About 40 episodes. I'm estimating 24 to 28 pages. I haven't decided how it will shape up just yet as I have to merge all these various sized comic strips. Some strips were one row. Some were a full page. I'm up to page 13 right now in this book and have "remastered" and cleaned up the artwork and made some corrections. I also removed the Benday Dots that I had originally placed on the artwork.

Once this book is finished, I will place it as a viewable PDF on my website for those that want to read the stories thus far. I think that is how I am going to archive the SEA SHANTY FUNNIES stories for new readers to "catch up" since I make this a "freebie" to read online as a webcomic. It'll be more organized that way. I will have a limited print run as an actual comic book on paper for those that want a copy to read in a traditional way as a give away to a SEA SHANTY FUNNIES Fan Club that I plan on launching where I will give a personalized Popeye related inked drawing that I'll do for you along with some other things. Again, more details later.

But here are two sample pages from each project. The THRILL SEEKER COMICS artwork is from a story that I illustrated about 20 years ago. Though I've redrawn recently two of the panels and reconstructed the artwork and made improvements due to being able to use my Wacom monitor with digital pen to draw on where I can zoom in for details. The THRILL SEEKER COMICS work is painfully slow for me to do while I can crank out the simpler cartoony work on the public domain-based Popeye related comics with SEA SHANTY FUNNIES.

It's like I'm working in two different worlds and ways doing these yet there are similar processes where one is slow and the other is fast-paced.

I thought some might be interested in seeing what I'm doing in my creative processes and these side hustle projects. Well, I really shouldn't say that as I'm not really making any money with this side hustle, I admit. I spend more money and time in this project and coming out at a financial loss... but it does satisfy my soul to create and make this putting it out into the world. Kind of fulfilling a dream. This is more of a creative outlet for me and if anyone... I mean anyone... finds any enjoyment or entertainment out of these, then that is reward enough for me at this moment in time. Kind of  a vanity project some would say as there is no financial return on investment. Not that I am complaining... but it is the reality of wanting to be an independent self-publisher, writer, and artist. I'm digressing. I have my day job. And it is a good job. But for decades I longed to work in comics full-time as a living but just couldn't swing it. Sometimes I look in the mirror and in my best Brando voice say, "I could've been a contender". Then again, I have come to realize, agree, and understand the alleged advice of Jack Kirby that "working in comics will break your heart".

Yet, God willing, I will pick up my pen and draw again tomorrow because that's what I do. That's what I love.

SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™ - Taking a Brief Pause to Catch Up on Some Things and Get Some Rest

Sorry everyone, but some things in life unexpectedly piled up on me this evening and I didn't have time to work on Tuesday's planned comic strip.

I also need to get a little rest as I've been fighting a cold. And juggling a few too many things at the moment. (I'm at a point right now where I'm drawing the next morning's comic strip the night before). This is all for fun and I am enjoying this, but I may need to build up another quick buffer batch of comic strips and retrench for a few days here to get a few comic strips "in the can" to give me some breathing room so that I'm not on tight self-imposed deadlines. This is a hobby and not a job I have to tell myself! Arf! Arf!

I know many of you understand and know I'm doing these for fun in my spare time. I'm still trying to figure this out and manage my schedule.

But here is a quick doodle for you that I did just now before I head off to bed!

And while our SEA SHANTY FUNNIES Popeye is off getting himself all fixed up in our present storyline, I'm planning to "switch to a new scene" for a few days and come back with a brief interlude in a subplot so that we can catch up some of the other cast of characters. So stay tuned!

Thanks! ~ Scott

THRILL SEEKER COMICS™: Proof copies of THRILL SEEKER COMICS ANTHOLOGY #2 Arrived Today!

Went home for lunch and the mailman brought me my proof copies of THRILL SEEKER COMICS ANTHOLOGY #2. It has a larger page count than the first issue. It is hefty. Feels so good to hold a copy in my hands. Details forthcoming on how you can get your own copy of this (as well as issue #1 if you missed it).

SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™: I Yam Contemplating offering a "Fan Club Membership" with Original Inked Drawing, this printed comic book, and more... Are you interested?

So, I'm doing something a little different. I've decided to collect all of the SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™ online comic strips (Episodes 1 – 40) that I ran online here in 2025 (up through New Year’s Eve/Day) and put them into a limited run comic book for posterity if you will. A souvenir print full-color comic / fanzine of sorts.

I really wanted to have his for myself first and foremost, but I know some of you might be interested in having a copy to hold in your hands and read.

Here is the first draft of the cover. I’m also “cleaning up” the interior artwork and re-laying it out to fit the printed page. I’ve also decided to touch up some art mistakes, removed (for the most part) the benday dots and have it be a little brighter in color. Kind of like the look of the comics these last few weeks that I have shifted the coloring ever so slightly.

I’m not planning on selling this in comic shops or online stores. This is a Fan Club collectible for those on the SEAS SHANTY FUNNIES Facebook Group and through my website.

What I’m thinking about doing is offering you a chance to purchase a “SEA SHANTY FUNNIES ANNUAL FAN CLUB MEMBERSHIP" that includes a fan club certificate, membership card, a few original trading cards, and a signed numbered print. And then… I’ll throw in an ORIGINAL INKED DRAWING that I will draw for you personally… and oh yeah, this issue #1 comic book as a freebie bonus giveaway.

I’m trying to figure out cost and shipping. I’m trying to keep costs low, but this may be in the $25 to $40 (U.S. Dollar) range. I’m not really making any profit as I figure most of the cost will cover printing charges, materials, and shipping. I'm trying to keep it low. I think I’m going to make this available via a Paypal payment or mailing a check.

Regardless, even if I only print up a dozen comics professionally, I want to have my own copy to put on my comic book rack here at home.

Would this be of interest to anyone here?

I’m trying to figure out how many would want this or like this to happen?

EMAIL ME or POST A COMMENT by clicking the link below.

Thanks!

THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS WEBSITE: I'm thinking about redesigning the website and separating sections

First, I sincerely appreciate all of you that are visiting this website. Right now, I am assuming most visitors are here to read SEA SHANTY FUNNIES webcomics. I'm shocked to discover this week that I am getting 1000+ viewers per day here.

About a month or so ago, I combined all my various websites to just come here to one spot. I wasn't happy with the former versions of the sites and was spending unnecessary money to keep them open and active and just brought them over here to Blogger for free website hosting. Honestly, I didn't think I was receiving any true traffic because of social media sites like Facebook (where both THRILL SEEKER COMICS and SEA SHANTY FUNNIES each have their own Facebook groups).

Realizing now that there is heavy traffic and knowing that I have several projects going on this year for both SEA SHANTY FUNNIES and THRILL SEEKER COMICS, I've been thinking about parsing back out this website into three websites with better visual and functionality presentation.

I want to break apart this site to have three distinct sections:

1. SEA SHANTY FUNNIES dedicated site that hosts the almost daily webcomic and has content related to my public domain-based Popeye series. Perhaps contains a reference guide to my alternate "Sea Shanty Funnies/Earth 24-C" universe where these characters exist and are slightly different than their 'official' counterparts. Also, to place a message board forum for the entire Internet outside of Facebook. I will also host the archive of past webcomics here.

2. THRILL SEEKER COMICS dedicated site that promotes the projects and comic book releases, sells my independently published comic books in an online store, and offers a reference 'Who's Who' style guide to the Thrill Seeker Comics Universe. Also, to place a message board forum for the entire Internet outside of Facebook. I will sell digital PDFs of the comics and also have actual printed copies for sale.

3. SCOTT McCULLAR dedicated site with my blog (including INNER RAMBLIN' THOUGHTS SHARED... which can be personal and/or political at times). Also, this site will host my biography, bibliography, online portfolio, social media links, etc. I also think that I may offer an online store to sell things like drawings, prints, some of personal collectibles that I will be selling soon like old comics, collector item toys, etc. that I am ready to part with).

Any thoughts, anyone?

Please post here or feel free to email me at scott@scottmccullar.com .

SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™ Episode 60 - Intermission and a Note...

SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™: Saturday Update

Happy Saturday !

A reminder, we are now taking Saturdays off for the strip for me to rest, catch up, and/or work on other projects [like my THRILL SEEKER COMICS series]. We will be back tomorrow on Sunday with a special "intermission" comic strip and special guests.

The current storyline will resume on Monday!

INNER RAMBLIN' THOUGHTS SHARED - R.E.S.P. E.C.T.

Whoever you are... Thank You!

I've noticed this month that traffic to my website here has surprisingly skyrocketed where I am receiving between 500 to 1,000 visitors per day. I'm a little shocked to see that many coming by daily. I am assuming that it has to do with the SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™ (almost) daily webcomics that I am self-publishing online at the moment.

Please be aware that I've redirected all my websites to this one page. I have my blog here and I know it can get personal and/or be political at times. And also have to do with things not related to comics or Popeye (or THRILL SEEKER COMICS™) if you are here for that, too.

I do have links at the top of this website that goes to both of those comic projects if you just want to stay in that area only and not wade through the blog.

Also, while I know that not everyone is on Facebook, I do have a SEA SHANTY FUNNIES Facebook Group and a THRILL SEEKER COMICS Facebook Group that you can join and follow along.

So, thank you very much for stopping by my website.

Feel free to post here a reply and say hello.

I never get interaction on my Blog and it would be wonderful to hear from visitors.

SEA SHANTY FUNNIES™ Episodes 54 and 55

THRILL SEEKER COMICS™: Sneak Peek of THRILL SEEKER COMICS ANTHOLOGY #3 Cover and Update

I worked on the cover for THRILL SEEKER COMICS ANTHOLOGY #3. Here is the sneak preview of the cover. Issue #3 itself is 75% complete with the interior artwork and I'm aiming at August or September release. I hope to have it finished up by June 1st.

The cover and story inside with THE RED DEVIL-BAT, KID DEVIL-MAYCARE, and THE LAVENDAR LEOPARDESS is an inside joke for my fellow classmates from Iles Elementary where some of us had Mrs. Nudo as our teacher in 5th Grade. She used to threaten to kiss us with purple lipstick if we misbehaved in her class. Somehow, that memory stuck in my psyche as a kid and I'm now taking that as inspiration for part of an upcoming spoof comic story where "Nudo's Shade #5 Lavender Lipstick" is a clue. So, this little inside easter egg is an ode to Mrs. Nudo. (I know my pal Troy V will remember for sure!)

THRILL SEEKER COMICS ANTHOLOGY #2 is completed and is currently at the printer. I'm just waiting for a handful of proof copies to arrive in the mail for me hopefully this week to review before I place the bigger order. More info on how to purchase once I figure out some logistics. I'm not doing a Kickstarter this time around and will be making copies available for purchase directly from me. I'm actually thinking about selling them through an Etsy store, or maybe eBay, or just directly contacting me via PayPal payment. Those copies purchased directly from me I will be happy to sign and throw in a sketch card or something. I will then try to get it set up on IndyPlanet for perpetual Print-On-Demand that will ship directly from the printer (sorry, those won't be autographed) and I will also look at having digital download through a couple of venues if you do eBooks or digital comics.

Also, later this spring, THRILL SEEKER COMICS OTHERWORLDLY DETECTIVE MYSTERIES #2 (featuring Ms. Tittenhurst) will collect the web comic with bonus material for a printed comic book. This will be available approximately May. Again, more information later on that. I hope to have this at the printer by March 1 for proof copies.

Also available with issue #2 will be back issues still in stock of THRILL SEEKER COMICS ANTHOLOGY #1 in case you missed out and want a copy of that.

2026 is going to be a busy year for my THRILL SEEKER COMICS series of books. More information to come
